Governor McDonnell Announces Lowest Tuition Increases in 10 Years

After making higher education reinvestment and reform a priority of his administration, Governor McDonnell provided a progress update at a press conference on Wednesday at VCU. In just over two years, the Governor, the General Assembly, the Virginia Business Community, and Virginia21 partnered to tackle one of the biggest challenges that young people face as they prepare for their future:  paying for college. The results are beginning to come back, and we are happy to say we are on the right track.

During his press conference Governor McDonnell said, “I am incredibly pleased to see that when Virginia students go back to school this fall, they will encounter the lowest yearly tuition increases in a decade. We ran on a commitment to making college more affordable and accessible for Virginia students. Now, we are turning that policy proposal into tangible results for Virginia parents and students.”

While we are on the right track, there is still more work to be done. Financial Aid resources are still short around $200 million dollars. Young people still need more and better information about making good decisions about their education and careers. This is a fight we are going to continue, but today we celebrate that we are heading in the right direction.
