Virginia Tech Issues Press Release Against Cuccinelli Letter
VIRGINIA PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES ASKED TO RESCIND
POLICIES PROTECTING UNDERREPRESENTED GROUP
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II has asked Virginia Tech and all other Virginia
public colleges and universities to rescind policies that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual
orientation, arguing in a letter received by Virginia Tech Friday that our Board of Visitors has no
legal authority to adopt such statements.
Student Government Association is committed to stand by the Principles of Community in their
entirety. We believe that inclusivity should be for all people not just for a select few and will
continue to advocate for equality in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In his letter, Cuccinelli wrote “It is my advice that the law and public policy of the
Commonwealth of Virginia prohibit a college or university from including ’sexual orientation,’
‘gender identity,’ ‘gender expression,’ or like classification as a protected class within its non-
discrimination policy absent specific authorization from the General Assembly,”
In a September 15th letter to Equality Virginia, then gubernatorial candidate McDonnell wrote,
“It is my firm belief that government should not discriminate based on race, sex, creed, religion,
national origin, or sexual orientation.” Virginia Tech’s Student Government calls on Governor
McDonnell to stand firm on this belief and come to the aid of the public colleges and universities
in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
