What is Democracy101?
Democracy101 is a new program from Virginia21 to recruit young people to serve as Poll
Workers or Officers of Election as they are called in Virginia, on Election Day.
Who can participate in Democracy101?
College students throughout the Commonwealth can serve as Officers of Election. You must be 18 years old and registered to vote. The voter registration deadline is October 6th, 2008.
When is Democracy101?
Recruitment for this program will begin as soon as you get back to your campus. Here, we will help you put together events across campus to promote DEM101.
Your participants will serve as Officers of Elections on Election Day which is November 4th, 2008! You will be working approximately from 6am-9pm (depends on your locality).
Where is Democracy101?
This program will occur in 21 different localities throughout Virginia. Got to the list of localities here
Why should you serve as a poll worker?
During our research we found that the average age of an Officer of Elections in Virginia is 72! Here at Virginia21 we love the older generation but it’s time for our generation to step up in their community and serve as the new leaders.
In addition to helping out your community and protecting democracy you will get PAID!!! Compensation ranges from locality to locality but averages $100!!!! This has the potential to be a great fundraiser for your student organization.
How does Democracy101 work?
Virginia21 has provided each campus with several marketing materials including posters, t-shirts, fliers and palmcards. It’s up to each campus coordinator to decide how they can best recruit students for this program.
Sign-up students to participate in Democracy101 and have them register with each locality to attend a training session (trainings vary per locality). Once students are trained as Officers of Elections all they have to do is work the polls on Election Day and get PAID!!!
